PIERRE – Three straight possessions with three downs and out at the start of Friday’s game for the Pierre Governors may have had some wonder what was wrong.
As it turns out, everything’s just fine.
Lincoln Kienholz passed for four touchdowns and ran for another with 193 yards rushing Friday as the Governors eventually ran away from Yankton 55-10 in the Homecoming game at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium.
Yankton had a touchdown called back by a penalty in the Bucks’ third possession. It would have marked the first time anyone had the lead on Pierre (4-0) this season.
Kienholz, who rushed for a career-high 222 yards against Yankton in 2021, ended the Governors’ fourth possession with a 62-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Pierre lead.
Kienholz had a two-yard touchdown run on Pierre’s next drive in the second quarter and the Governors led 14-0.
After a Yankton field goal, Kienholz hit Zabel with a touchdown pass, then threw another to Zabel from 30 yards with 1:07 left in the first half and Pierre led 28-3 at halftime.
Kienholz threw a touchdown pass to Jackson Edman in the third quarter. Brock Moser had a 52-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, followed by a Kienholz scoring pass to Cade Kaiser and Trevor Rounds’ first varsity touchdown on a run with two minutes left.
Kienholz was 11-of-20 passing for 175 yards. Moser rushed for 131 yards. Kaiser had five receptions for 100 yards.
Pierre’s defense registered nine sacks, three by Chase Carda. Gavin Stotts had 10 tackles.
