ONIDA – The road warriors did it again.
For the second straight week, Irene-Wakonda made a long trip to upset a higher seed in the 9B playoffs, coming from 10 points down in the third quarter to defeat Sully Buttes 36-30 in a quarterfinal game at Charger Field.
Dashell Spurrell threw three second-half touchdown passes for Irene-Wakonda (5-5), including a six-yard strike to Clay Broderson with 5:28 left for the go-ahead score.
Sully Buttes (7-3) drove to their own 44, just inches short of a first down, when quarterback Landon Hepker was stopped on a fourth-down play by the Eagles’ Miles Pollman with 2:44 remaining. Irene-Wakonda forced the Chargers to use their last time out, then clinched the victory with a first-down run by Spurrell with just over one minute left.
Hepker passed for 164 yards and a touchdown to Trever Marshall and had 133 yards rushing with a touchdown. Lucas Arcoren and Thomas Farries also had scoring carries for Sully Buttes.
Chase Dahlerup had two touchdown runs for Irene-Wakonda, who will play on Friday, November 4 in the 9B semifinal round at Herreid/Selby Area, who defeated Avon 44-14 on Thursday.
