MARCH 15, 2023:
It was their first time competing, but that didn’t stop the Pierre TF Riggs High School ProStart® team from doing well at the state competition yesterday (March 14, 2023) in Pierre.
Teams competed in three categories– cake decorating, management and culinary. Pierre took first in management and second in culinary. Pierre’s Ellie Noyes earned the President’s Award for exhibiting leadership throughout the day’s competition. Pierre’s Ayden Syll was recognized with the Knife Skills Award due to his overall technique and talent in the kitchen.
Winning first in the management category earns the Pierre team a trip to the national competition in May. In this competition, students present the steps needed to start and operate a restaurant, including concept, operations, marketing, critical thinking and menu. Foodservice and industry professionals evaluate the teams’ business plans and presentation skills. Along with Noyes and Syll, team members were Tyler Want, Gavin Jacobson and Marlee Shorter. They are instructed by LaKisha (la-key-sha) Jordan.
Sturgis Brown won the culinary and cake decorating categories.
