Keeping animals cool during a summer heat wave is critical to maintaining their highest possible value when it comes time to sell them.
Veterinarian Dr. Jeff Kaisand encourages animal owners to know the warning signs of heat stress.
The key to keeping the animals healthy during a heat wave is water. Lots and lots of fresh, clean water. Kainsand says the availability of shade is also key for animals outside. For animals indoors, make sure there is adequate ventilation and consider the use of misters.
If you choose to use misters, Kaisand has some tips to get the most benefit.
Kainsand says producers may want to look at changing the feeding schedules of their animals because they generate heat from digestion.
While animals are different whether they are “feathers or leathers,” the practices for managing heat stress are universal. Kainsand says you do not need to make special considerations for different animals on a diverse operation.
If you see any signs of heat stress, contact your livestock veterinarian as soon as possible.
