As the use of electric bikes– or e-bikes– becomes more and more popular, the Pierre City Commission wants to ensure the safety of those riding them, as well as those who may cross paths with them.
Pierre City Planner Emeline Post says city staff has been researching what regulations to include when updating city ordinances to include e-bikes.
Post says in another section of city ordinance, they’re updating some verbiage.
So far there haven’t been problems with the use of e-bikes in Pierre, but Post says it’ll be good to have city ordinances updated in case something comes up.
The Pierre City Commission will considering giving final approval for the ordinance updates covering the use of e-bikes within city limits during their meeting Tuesday evening (July 7, 2026).
