A 57 year old man from Gettysburg faces drug charges after an incident in Gettysburg earlier this month.
On June 10, 2023, the Gettysburg Police Department and Gettysburg Ambulance were dispatched to KJ’s Inn and Suites in Gettysburg for a male who was unconscious. Selwyn Jones of Gettysburg was treated and released by medical personnel.
Jones was taken into custody by the Gettysburg Police Department and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance; Use or Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Ingestion of an Intoxicant Other Than Alcohol. He was taken to the Hughes County Jail, where court information says he was released on a Personal Recognizance Bond.
Jones is scheduled to have his initial court appearance July 25 in Potter County. The incident is still under investigation.
The Gettysburg Police Department was assisted by sheriff’s departments from Corson, Potter, Campbell and Sully counties and the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
Jones gained national attention as a civil rights advocate three years ago following the death (May 25, 2020) of his nephew George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He helped spearhead the effort to get the Gettysburg Police Department to remove the Confederate flag from it’s police patch because it served as a reminder of long-standing racism, hate and anti-Black policies. On July 7, 2020, the city confirmed the patch would no longer be used.
Two others are also facing charges related to the incident. 32 year old Tarin James of Gettysburg is charged with Possession and Ingestion of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He is being held at the Faulk County Jail in Faulkton.
