Lake Francis Case Economic Development and collaborators (Dakota Resources and the Barger Foundation) have developed a series of childcare initiatives designed to foster a thriving and supportive environment for the Chamberlain/Oacoma communities.
Priority issues identified include staffing shortages, inconsistent openings and closings, wage and benefits challenges, location concerns, building upkeep, limited resources for both daycares and parents and the overall shortage of childcare services. Contributing factors identified include the increasing number of dual-income families, a shortage of qualified staff, rising costs of supplies and employees, economic factors like inflation, strict daycare regulations, state income guidelines and funding challenges.
Mike Lauritsen, Executive Director of Lake Francis Case Economic Development, says the programs they’ve developed are the Childcare Employee Bonus Program, Maintenance and Enhancement of Childcare Facilities, Childcare Incubator Fund, Employer Matching Tuition Assistance, Certification Courses for Childcare Providers and Chamber of Commerce Membership for Childcare Providers.
The comprehensive programs offered by LFCED include:
-
Childcare Employee Bonus Program: Recognizing the importance of a well-compensated workforce, this program rewards childcare employees with bonuses to improve job satisfaction and retention.
-
Maintenance and Enhancement of Childcare Facilities: This initiative focuses on ensuring the safety and comfort of children by providing funding for necessary maintenance and improvements to existing childcare facilities.
-
Childcare Incubator Fund: Entrepreneurs and existing providers can benefit from forgivable loans of up to $15,000 to establish new childcare facilities or expand existing ones. This initiative encourages entrepreneurship and ensures families have access to reliable and trusted childcare services.
-
Employer Matching Tuition Assistance: LFCED offers tuition assistance for childcare services, providing up to $2,000 per year. To maximize support, parents are encouraged to secure matching contributions from their employers. This collaborative effort enhances available grants and amplifies financial assistance for families in need.
-
Certification Courses for Childcare Providers: LFCED supports professional development by covering the costs of certification courses for childcare providers, ensuring a highly qualified workforce.
-
Chamber of Commerce Membership for Childcare Providers: To foster collaboration, visibility, and community support, LFCED covers Chamber of Commerce membership fees for all registered childcare providers. This initiative creates a network that benefits both families and providers.
