If you saw a large airplane that appeared to fly by the State Capitol Building in Pierre during the noon hour on Monday (Aug. 7, 2023) and wondered what it was doing, the answer is: the pilot was practicing.
A spokesperson with Mustang Aviation says it was a United States Air Force C130J-30 Super Hercules practicing “touch and go’s” at the Pierre Regional Airport.
According to manufacturer Lockheed Martin’s website, the aircraft can fly at up to 26,000 feet with 44,500 pounds of cargo. At 22,000 feet, it can fly at up to 410mph. It’s maximum load is 128 combat troops or 92 paratroopers.
