AUGUST 24, 2023:
The state of South Dakota has launched another marketing campaign; this time it’s to help normalize discussions surrounding mental health.
Department of Social Services Secretary Matt Althoff says the “Notes to Self” grew out of conversations and information gathered from South Dakotans.
Althoff says “Notes to Self” were developed to “generate awareness and eliminate stigmas surrounding behavioral health concerns.”
Althoff says they kept two types of people in mind while developing the “Notes to Self” messaging. One group is those who have sought out some form of mental health care.
He says the other targeted group is those providing support.
Althoff says South Dakotans tend to take pride in being ‘tough’ and ‘resilient.’ However, they want people to know that they aren’t alone in whatever struggles they might be facing.
Those experiencing mental-health-related distress are encouraged to call 988, the nationwide Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It provides 24/7 access to trained crisis specialists.

The state of South Dakota has launched another marketing campaign; this time it’s to help normalize discussions surrounding mental health.
The Department of Social Services Division of Behavioral Health’s “Notes to Self” efforts were developed to “generate awareness and eliminate stigmas surrounding behavioral health concerns.” The campaign also aims to emphasize the roles we can all take in prevention and early intervention.
Secretary Matt Althoff says South Dakotans tend to take pride in being ‘tough’ and ‘resilient’. However, he says they want people to know that they aren’t alone in whatever struggles they might be facing.
Althoff says the campaign, which gathered market research from South Dakotans, has a goal of reaching citizens in every corner of the state. He says they was to pay special attention to demographics where suicide has been more prevalent.
The campaign will feature ads across the state which will educate residents and promote resources available to help those in need. The launch of the campaign coincides with the Second Annual Suicide Prevention Conference hosted by the Department of Social Services, Division of Behavioral Health, in partnership with other state agencies.
The campaign includes television, radio and internet ads along with billboards and other efforts. These “Notes to Self” reminders will focus on the existence of behavioral health needs in our communities and the resources available to all who are experiencing them.
Those experiencing mental-health-related distress are encouraged to call 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. 988 was launched nationwide one year ago and provides 24/7 access to trained crisis specialists.
