Marlene Marie was born to Albin and Kora (Lintvedt) Lindquist on November 24, 1941 in Pierre, SD. She was raised in Vivian with her eight siblings. Her father died when she was just seven years old, leaving behind a house full of children. This resulted in Marlene being very close to her siblings, and remaining so for the rest of their lives. She graduated from Vivian High with the class of ’59, and continued her education at St. John’s McNamara School of Nursing in Rapid City, where her passion was born.
After college, Marlene moved to New York to start her life-long nursing career. She then went to Texas. A significant topic of conversation over the years, Marlene was in Dallas working when Kennedy was shot. She then went to Denver to work for a time, before coming back home. She worked at the Murdo Hospital, and then on August 7, 1966, Marlene married Gordon Huffman. They made their home on “the farm” south of Draper. She took some time off to raise her two children- Zane Thomas and Jeanine Marie.
Marlene went back to work as Lyman County Health Nurse. She retired in December 1989. On March 26, 1993, Marlene married Keith Patrick. She continued on with various roles in the medical field over the years, including home health and was a licensed massage therapist. In 2010, Marlene was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was the first one in SD to receive pinpoint radiation to treat the cancer. She was invited to many events for this momentous occasion, including a dinner at the Governor’s Mansion. She was proud to be the first to help others, especially being the nurse that she was.
After her retirement, she never left her role as a nurse. She was always giving advice and ready to assist area residents with their medical needs. Marlene enjoyed visiting and could strike up a conversation with about anyone. In her later years, she enjoyed making her famous peanut brittle at the holidays and delivering it to a numerous amount of people.
Marlene’s family, friends, children, and grandchildren were the most important people in her life. Described as “the glue that held the family together,” she loved having her family get together. She was fond of putting together photo albums of all of her family’s accomplishments and was proud to show them to anyone who would take the time to look. She gave selflessly to all she knew and loved. Marlene was a lifetime member of the Vivian Lutheran Church.
Grateful for sharing her life are her loving husband of almost 31 years, Keith; children: Zane (Marci) Huffman, and Jeanine (Kevin) Patrick; five grandchildren: Taylor (Eliot) Hight, Carmen Patrick, Raeann Patrick, Hannah (Marc Lind) Huffman, and Taryn Huffman; one great-granddaughter, Millie, and another on the way; one brother: Orin Lindquist.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Gordon; brothers: Dean and Gary; sisters: Arla, Ula, Betty, Diann, and Karen.
