July has now taken the lead as the busiest month so far this year (2026) for people flying out of the Pierre Regional Airport.
That’s according to City Commissioner Jamie Huizenga who says the airport continues to see more and more traffic.
Huizenga says the Pierre Airport has now past an important milestone number for an essential air service airport.
If the Pierre Regional Airport surpasses the 10,000 boardings number within a year, it becomes eligible to receive a little more than $1-million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to help support airport operations.
And, Huizenga says, the airport’s busiest months of the year are still ahead of us.
The federal essential air service program provides a subsidy to the company providing service in order to maintain flight options at small airports around the country.
As the federal essential air service contract holder for the Pierre Regional Airport, SkyWest, flying as United Express, currently provides 12 weekly round-trip flights between Pierre and the Denver International Airport.
SkyWest also serves the Watertown Regional Airport. From there, they provide Delta flights to Minneapolis-St. Paul, and United Express flights to Denver.
