Before applying crop protection products, sprayer operators take things such as how soon it may rain, wind speed and humidity into consideration in order to get the most efficient, effective coverage possible. Finding that information out will be easier at the Onida Municipal Airport, thanks to a combination of federal, state and local funding.
The South Dakota has approved the dollars needed to put up an Automated Weather Observation Station at the airport in Onida.
Jon Becker with the State Department of Transportation’s Office of Air, Rail and Transit told the State Aeronautics Commission that the bulk of the cost will come from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
The town of Onida is also paying $21,000 toward the cost of the project.
The airport at Onida is one of the busiest in the state when it comes to traffic from crop sprayers, with around half-a-dozen of them operating from there during the busiest times of year.
