BROOKINGS, S.D. – State Golf Tournaments teed off yesterday at four locations and some Central South Dakota players begin the second day of competition in contention for individual and team titles. Wessington Springs holds the lead in the Class B Boys Tournament, led by Blake Larson, the individual leader with a 2-over par 74 at the Brookings Country Club. The top three players for the Spartans totaled a 21-over 237, nine strokes better than Hamlin and Hanson who are tied for second place. Sully Buttes is in eighth place, but just 14 shots back, as they were led individually by sophomore Gavin Colson who fired a 3-over 75. Colson and Miller’s Derek Brueggeman are tied for second in the individual standings, as the Rustlers begin the day 15 shots back collectively. Drake Mueller of Faulkton Area shot a 76 and is tied for fourth individually.
Meanwhile at the State B Girls Tournament at Edgebrook Golf Course, Chester holds the team lead with a 40-over par 250 total score, seven shots better than Miller, who is in a fairly comfortable second place going into the tournament’s final day. Jadyn McDonald’s 4-over 76 leads all individuals, but Jayce Pugh of Miller tallied a 77 to start the day just one shot back. Olivia Mikkelsen of Potter County is in fourth place with an 81, while Kamri Kittelsen of Jones County, Olivia Olson of Sully Buttes, Kaihlyn Anderberg of Miller, and Taryn Hettick of Selby Area are all in the top ten as well.
The Pierre Governors had their struggles in the first day of play at the State AA Girls Golf Tournament at Hillcrest Country Club in Yankton. The young Governor squad had shown improvement over the season and were quite pleased with a fourth-place finish at the ESD Tournament last week, but their scores soared a bit on Monday. Hadley Hart had the top score with a 98 while Andrea Mosteller carded a 99. Olivia Braun of Aberdeen Central leads the individual race with an even par 72, three shots better than Allison Meyerink of Mitchell. But Mitchell leads the team standings with a 331 composite (+43), one shot better than Aberdeen and two better than Watertown in a very tight race. Meanwhile Tori Peterson of Sioux Falls Christian leads the Class A girls tournament heading into its second day in Sioux Falls. Peterson’s 6-over par 77 leads the individual field while her Charger team holds a 21-shot lead over Vermillion and West Central in the team standings at the Bakker Crossing Golf Course.
