With Pierre’s soccer season less than a month away, players are tuning up for a long and demanding season. Some are training at club camps, some are working on their game solo or with a trainer, but a large majority of the Governor girls are spending their summers winning national championship trophies.
Earlier in July, former Governor and future collegiate athlete Jasmine Jost and rising junior Lexie Hillmer won the U19 and U16 national championship with the Black Hills Rapids Soccer Club out in Denver. Both played key roles with their club and represented Pierre and the state of South Dakota with great success. On Thursday, Brittney Sargent, Emlyn Swanson, Josepine Wurtz, Myah Fravel, Cameron Larson and Aubrey Fischer concluded a dream run out west with another championship victory. The group was an integral part of South Dakota United Spirit team that were essentially untouchable over the last few weeks.
The journey started in Chicago back in June when the club qualified by winning the Midwest Regional Cup in Chicago. They went undefeated (5-0) taking down clubs from Indiana, Minnesota and Illinois. Through qualifying, they earned a coveted spot in the US Club Soccer National Cup out in Denver. They would go 2-0-1 with wins over a team from Georgia (4-1) and a team from Iowa (3-2). Their lone draw came in a 2-2 tie with a team from Arlington Virginia. All those results placed them in the championship match where they would face off with Desert Communities Soccer Club who came from California.
On a scorcher of an afternoon, the team stayed red-hot winning 3-0 thanks to an Aubrey Fischer goal and a shutout performance between the pipes from Emlyn Swanson. The girls will bring home their trophy and hope to carry that momentum into the Governors high school season.
