Friday (June 14, 2024) is Flag Day in the United States.
In honor of that, Hughes County Sheriff Patrick Callahan received a permit from the State to have people gather on the Capitol steps at 12:15pm CT to take a group photo. He encourages folks to bring an American flag or other patriotic items with them.
This won’t be the first time Callahan has done something to celebrate Flag Day.
President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation in 1916 designating June 14 as Flag Day. In 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed the formal observance into law. And, it falls during Flag Week, after Congress made that declaration in 1966.
Again, folks are invited bring their American flags and gather on the front steps of the Capitol in Pierre Friday at 12:15pm CT to take a group photo.
Flag Day commemorates June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress determined the composition of the nation’s banner: “Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
