It was a historical night at Phil Trautner Stadium as for the first time since soccer became a sanctioned high school sport in the state of South Dakota, there was soccer on Hollister Field. The stadium was packed out with Govs fateful in attendance for a memorable night, and with perfect weather, they were treated to some great soccer.
The boy’s team got things started the right way with a 2-1 win over the Brown Scoopers. The Gov’s controlled the first half of play, scoring two goals (Alex Oedekoven & Caleb Morris) and taking a comfortable lead into halftime. But Sturgis came out with a chip on their shoulder in the second half and closed the deficit to one goal after consistent pressure finally resulted in their first score. The Gov’s were able to hold on and earn their second victory of the year improving to 2-1.
In the primetime slot, the Pierre Govs Girl’s Team seized the moment playing under the lights and continued their great momentum to the start of the 2024 season winning 7-0. Emlyn Swanson has still yet to surrender a goal this year and continued her great play Thursday between the pipes with yet another shutout performance. But she has some great defensive play from Aly Hutchinson (a.k.a The Bullet) & Natalie Flottmeyer that assisted in the clean stat sheet. The Gov’s got goals from all over the place including scores from Lexie Hilmer, Gracelyn Taylor (2), Zoey Bauer, Katie Hostler & Devyn VanRoekel. The Govs Girl’s team improves to 3-0 on the year.
