In NDSU’s Saturday win over Northern Iowa, a former Pierre Governor got the spotlight as Grey Zabel was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference offensive lineman of the week for the second time this season. Zabel, standing 6’6″ and 305 pounds, graded out at 94 percent with zero missed assignments, led the Bison offensive line in physicality points, and did not allow any tackles for loss, sacks or quarterback hits in a 42-19 win over Northern Iowa. NDSU averaged 5.1 yards per carry, rushed for 189 yards in the game, and converted 7 of 10 third down opportunities to improve to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference.
Zabel is no stranger to success. In his years at T.F. Riggs playing for the Govs, Zabel was a team captain, a 2x all-state player on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, and was named to the 2019 Sioux Falls Argus Leader Elite 45; a big deal in South Dakota. Zabel was also an integral part in the Govs success as he started on three straight State Championship teams, those teams going a combined 31-5.
Athleticism runs in the Zabel family as Grey has two brothers playing collegiate ball. Grey’s brother, Peyton, was drafted to the MLB out of high school and pitched at Texas State. Grey’s other brother, Jett, is also one of Grey’s teammates at NDSU with Jett being a redshirt freshman tight end for the Bison.
