Repairs have been made to the beach area along Island View Drive near the American Legion in Pierre.
Mayor Todd Johnson says rising and falling water levels and natural erosion created an unsafe space.
On a separate water related issue, Johnson says the City of Pierre was notified the State of South Dakota was having work done near Capitol Lake and Capitol Creek.

Aug. 22, 2026:
The City of Pierre is advising people to stay out of marked areas along Island View Drive near the American Legion following recent heavy rainfall.
The recent rainfall has resulted in an unsafe surface within the marked areas along Island View Drive. For the safety of all, the City asks the public to obey all markings, barricades and signage and avoid entering or disturbing these areas.
Adults are asked to use caution in the area and keep children and pets away from all marked locations.
