The Mobridge-Pollock girls basketball team went to Madison on Saturday night to partake in America’s Hometown Classic. In one of just 18 games played there that day between schools from three states, the Lady Tigers defeated Flandreau 57-36. The Fliers came in with a tall starting lineup that included 6’2” freshman phenom Morgan Sheppard, but it made no difference to Mobridge-Pollock, who supplied another suffocating defensive performance. They held Flandreau to only five points in the opening quarter, and would lead it 25-16 at the half. The teams played an even third quarter, before the Lady Tigers put on the squeeze in the fourth, with a 16-6 margin.
Flandreau shot less than 20% from the field, and had the ball stolen away on 13 occasions. Despite their noticeable height advantage, the Fliers won the rebound battle by only one. The Lady Tigers had a good bounceback performance offensively as well, shooting over 45%, including going 7-of-20 from three-point range. Senior forward Charley Henderson was our player of the game, scoring a season-best 20 points with five rebounds and three assists. Junior Blake Thompson had 11 points to go with four steals. For Flandreau, freshman Morgan Sheppard scored 19, despite going just 4-of-19 from the field. She lived at the free throw line, sinking 10 shots from there. With the win, Mobridge-Pollock improves to 6-1 this season. They are off again until Thursday, when they travel to face Miller. The Lady Rustlers are right on their heels in 6A, with a 4-0 start.
