Authorities have determined the cause of death for a 43 man who shot at law enforcement officers at a home in Brandon, South Dakota, last month (Feb. 12, 2025).
Abe Joseph Boushee died of smoke inhalation and methamphetamine toxicity.
The United States Marshals Service and the Brandon Police Department were at the home in Brandon (113 W. Confier Street) to arrest Boushee on five outstanding warrants from Lincoln County. The warrants were for felony drug offenses, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, two felony warrants for bond violations and a misdemeanor traffic warrant.
Following the standoff, during which officers did not shoot back, Boushee’s home started on fire. After the fire was extinguished, Boushee’s body was found in the basement.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives continues to investigate the origin of the fire. He said that information will be released once the AFT investigation is complete, in accordance with ATF policies.
There were no injuries to law enforcement or members of the public during the incident.
February 14, 2025:
Authorities have identified the person involved in a standoff with law enforcement earlier this week in Brandon, South Dakota.
The Attorney General’s Office says 43 year old Abe Joseph Boushee is the person who was found dead at a home (113 W. Confier Street) that had been damaged by fire on Wednesday (Feb. 12, 2025). An autopsy will be conducted.
The United States Marshals Service and the Brandon Police Department were at the home to make an arrest of Boushee on five outstanding warrants from Lincoln County. The warrants were for felony drug offenses, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, two felony warrants for bond violations and a misdemeanor traffic warrant.
Attorney General Marty Jackley says during the standoff, shots were fired at law enforcement, but they did not return fire. He says law enforcement deployed chemical agents into the residence. The residence eventually started on fire, and the suspect was found deceased inside the home.
Jackley says DCI is leading the overall investigation, and the ATF and State Fire Marshal are assisting with the origin of fire in the investigation. He says evidence test results are expected to take several months.
The AG’s Office will provide more information once the investigation is complete.
There were no injuries to law enforcement or members of the public during the incident.
February 12, 2025:
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation confirm that a body of a male has been found at a home in Brandon (113 W. Confier St.) which was destroyed by fire following a standoff with law enforcement Wednesday (Feb. 11, 2025).
The United States Marshals Services and the Brandon Police Department were at the home to serve an arrest warrant. The subject of the warrant had five outstanding warrants from Lincoln County, including felony drug offenses, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, two felony warrants for bond violations and a misdemeanor traffic warrant.
Shots were fired from the home during the event, which lasted several hours. Law enforcement did not return fire.
The home eventually started on fire and Minnehaha County Chief Deputy Jeff Gromer says the situation was dangerous enough that officers had to take action.
The State Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation, which includes investigating the origin of the house fire.
The name of the person found is not yet being released pending notification of family members. An autopsy will be performed.
There were no injuries to law enforcement or members of the public.
