May 7, 2025, update:
The annual South Dakota Law Enforcement Memorial Wreath Laying Ceremony was held Wednesday morning (May 7, 2025) along Capitol Lake in Pierre.
Guest speaker and Rapid City Police Chief Don Hedrick said those remembered on the state’s Law Enforcement Memorial represent local, county, tribal, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
Hedrick went on to talk about one of his worst days on the job– a shooting incident that happened in Rapid City on Aug. 2, 2011.
Rapid City Police Officers Nick Armstrong and Ryan McCandless were both shot in the chest and Officer Tim Doyle was shot in the jaw. McCandless died the same day and Armstrong died four days later. The detained suspect, Daniel Tiger, received two gunshot wounds and died the following day.
Doyle, the only survivor, returned to his job with the Rapid City Police Department once he had recovered from his injuries.
After the Wreath Laying Ceremony, a memorial service was held, with state Department of Public Safety Secretary Robert Perry as the keynote speaker.
