A family of three was displaced, but no one was injured in a structure fire Wednesday afternoon (May 14, 2025) about 18 miles north of Pierre, near the former Oahe Speedway racetrack.
Pierre Rural Volunteer Fire Department Chief Doug Hinkle says the mobile home was pretty much fully engulfed, with three-quarters of it collapsed, by the time Pierre Rural and Onida firefighters arrived. He said the scary part about this fire was a propane tank that was beside the home.
Hinkle says they were able to get the propane tank cooled down.
Hinkle says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Hinkle says crews were on scene for about 2.5 hours.
The fire was near the Spring Creek and Cow Creek state recreation areas along the Hughes County and Sully County border. During the summer– especially on weekends– Spring Creek and Cow Creek are two of the busiest parks or recreation areas supervised by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks.
On the land adjacent to the two recreation areas, a private developer is currently selling lots for an RV Park and Development to accommodate the rapidly growing popularity of that location along the Missouri River in central South Dakota.
