CRAZY HORSE, SD- Crazy Horse Memorial® welcomes Olympic Gold Medalist Billy Mills for Public Book Signing!
Olympic Gold Medalist Billy Mills (Oglala Lakota) will be signing his new book Wings of an Eagle: The Gold Medal Dreams of Billy Mills at Crazy Horse Memorial® on August 22, 2025, from 10:00AM until 11:30AM. The book signing and presentation will be included with admission to the Memorial and will take place on the Veranda Stage.
Billy Mills remains the only American to win Gold in the 10,000-meter run in Olympics history. His 1964 victory in Tokyo is considered the greatest Olympic upset because he was virtually unknown going into the event. Born in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, Mills began competitive running while attending Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas. After graduating from the University of Kansas in 1962, Mills joined the Marine Corps and was a first lieutenant when he competed in the 1964 games.
Wings of an Eagle: The Gold Medal Dreams of Billy Mills was published in 2024 and was co-written by Mills and Donna Janell Bowman and illustrated by accomplished Lakota artist S. D. Nelson. Visitors will be able to purchase Wings of an Eagle from the gift shop at Crazy Horse Memorial®.
Billy Mills has had a close relationship with Crazy Horse Memorial® for over 40 years and has been a strong advocate for the Memorial’s mission. Initially forming a strong bond with Ruth Ziolkowski, Mills has brought hundreds of Native youth to the Memorial throughout the years with his non-profit, Running Strong for American Indian Youth. He is also featured in the Memorial’s film Dynamite and Dreams.
Mills’ book signing and presentation is included with admission to the Memorial and will begin at 10:00AM on the Veranda Stage on August 22, 2025. Seating and copies of Wings of an Eagle (for purchase) will be first-come, first-served.
