Unveiling their new gray uniforms, the Stanley County Buffaloes were poised to deliver a more competitive performance for their contingent of fans after falling 40-0 a week prior to Parkston. On their new turf field, the Buffs seemed more confident with much more suitable weather for their spread offense. The Leola/Frederick Area Titans came in with a host of injuries, and knew they would likely get into a knock-down, drag-out fight with Stanley County. And a fight it was.
Stanley County got the ball to start the game, but threw an interception of third and eight to Westyn Thorpe who would score on a short run only a few plays later. After converting the two-point play, they took a 8-0 lead. Stanley County answered with a Landon Bame touchdown to even the score 8-8. That would be a running theme in this game as both team would be trading blows. One of those punches came from Titan quarterback Preston Sumption who took off for a 54-yard touchdown on a quarterback-keeper.
Sprinkled in Landon Bame’s four touchdown performance was an equally as impressive performance from wide receiver Paxton Deal who showed off his elite athleticism with a few contested catches, one of which came on a 4th & 15 for a touchdown.
Tied 22-22 at the half, everyone at Ole Williamson Field knew they were in for a cinematic second half.
The defenses stiffened up in the second half, but the Buffaloes took a lead after Landon Bame scored to make it 28-22. In the fourth quarter the Titans would manufacture a long drive that would drain clock and end up in a touchdown run by Sumption on a 4th & 6. The successful two-point conversion gave the Titans a 32-30 lead with just under three minutes to play.
After a false start penalty, the Buffaloes, deep in their own territory, put their no-huddle offense to work. A couple big plays from Paxton Deal, including a 22-yard catch on 2nd & 20 would get Stanley County in Titan territory where they continued to chip away. With :30 left on the clock, the Buffaloes holding two timeouts got the ball inside the Titan five, and Landon Bame would score on his shortest, but biggest run of the night. A one-yard touchdown run by Bame would cap off an incredible drive by the Buffaloes who took the 36-32 lead. Bame would field an interception on the ensuing drive to secure the Buffaloes first win of the season.
Bame would earn the Baumann Lumber Player of the Game honors, here he is with his shirt pictured below:
