It’s not about how you get there, it only matters that you get there, and Sunday’s FCS Selection Show revealed both USD and SDSU will be there. Both the Coyotes and Jackrabbits will be playing postseason football after Sunday’s selection show that USD earned the 11-seed and SDSU with the 14-seed in this year’s FCS playoff.
The Coyotes were certainly deserving of a spot in the 16-team playoff, winning 8 of their last 10 games after starting 0-2. Their biggest victories came in the home stretch when they beat SDSU at home and won a 53-51 OT thriller in their final regular season game against Southern Illinois.
SDSU on the other hand, was unsure if they were going to be able to limp to the finish line with four straight losses coming into their final regular season game. The Jacks, who started 7-0, lost their starting quarterback and lost four straight games. The Jacks faced essentially a regular season playoff game Saturday, knowing they would need a win if they had any shot of breaking into the bracket.
The Jacks got that win, though it wasn’t easy. It required a Jack Henry heave on the final play from overtime for a touchdown to keep the hopes alive. The Jacks will face off with New Hampshire on Saturday in the noon slate. The Coyotes will face off with Drake on the 29th at noon as well. The Jacks beat Drake in the regular season 42-21 earlier this year.
