A woman who has spent hundreds of hours fundraising and working to preserve a handful of historical locations in Fort Pierre will be honored during the 2026 State Historical Society’s annual history conference in June.
Connie Carlisle is being honored with a Governor’s Award. She volunteers at the Verendrye (pronounced Var-en’-dree) Museum, Fort Pierre Depot Museum, Sansarc Country School Museum, 1905 Stanley County Jail and the Log Cabin Visitor Center.
The June 3 awards luncheon is part of the State Historical Society’s annual history conference, taking place June 1-3 in Fort Pierre. This year’s theme is “Grit and Glory.”
Other individuals and entities receiving Governor’s Awards this year for their efforts in preserving South Dakota history are the Mead Museum in Yankton, the Mellette County Historical Society in White River, Ryan Decker of the Tea Area School District, Bill Hoskins of Sioux Falls, Lisa Lindell of Brookings, Augustana University Professor of History Michael J. Mullin of Humboldt.
