It was about as perfect of a night as you could have asked for on Friday night at Hyde Stadium for game one of the Zap and Spuds weekend series. Fantastic weather with a great crowd for First Responders Appreciation night was a great recipe for a thrilling game between the two rivals.
The Zap, coming off a win in their last contest, opened the game with consistent contact, putting runners on base, moving them around and bringing in runs. Thanks to timely hits from Mason Melton, Conor Goldberg and Gavin Fraser, the Zap were able to jump out to 4-0 lead. With Pierce Hollowell dealing on the mound, the Zap looked like they might cruise to an easy win.
The Spuds punched back with a two-run homer from Hunter Stonecipher that brought Casper within two, but the bottom of the inning saw a Ty Farwell no-doubter that put the Zap back in front by four, leading 6-2.
The Spuds wouldn’t go quietly, scoring again in the 7th inning, but Ty Farwell was about to make another big impact on the game. With two outs and Farwell at third, a wild pitch opened a brief window for Farwell to score. Without thinking, he took off for home and beat out a bang-bang play at the plate that would prove to add some much needed insurance.
The Spuds would score two more in the eighth inning, but Lucas Tolle and Quinn Ludvigsen were shutdown in the ninth as Farwell’s aggressive play at the plate proved to be the difference.
The Zap and Spuds will face off again in game two of their three game series Saturday night at 6:05 PM CT.
