The City of Pierre has installed throwable life rings at Mickelson Pond and the Griffin Park Swim Beach.
City Commissioner Robin Lerseth says the life rings will improve water safety in areas frequently used by residents and visitors.
Parks purchased the equipment. Streets assisted with installation. Fire helped coordinate placement and maintenance.
Fire Chief Ian Paul says he hopes the throwable life rings are something people never have to use. But if an emergency does happen, he says it’s reassuring to know the equipment is available.
Similar life rings were installed at the Causeway fishing piers several years ago after a close-call incident highlighted the importance of having emergency equipment nearby.
