South Dakota Board of Education Standards approves showing of prenatal development videos in public schools

The South Dakota Board of Education Standards unanimously recommended two videos detailing human development from conception to birth during a meeting this week (June 22, 2026).

The requirement comes after the state legislature passed and Governor Larry Rhoden signed House Bill 1313 during the 2026 Legislative Session. The bill requires education in prenatal human growth and development.

Board President Steve Perkins says the videos ensure that children will get a firsthand understanding of how babies develop.
