(Greater Dakota News Service)- Yesterday (Sept. 22) in federal court, government attorneys said 95% of US households have been counted so there’s no reason for a judge to order the Census Bureau to extend the head count.
The attorneys said a temporary restraining order issued by a federal judge is making the Census Bureau’s job more difficult to finish the 2020 census. The court papers were filed ahead ahead of a virtual court hearing in California over whether the 2020 census should stop at the end of September or continue through October.
According to the Bureau’s latest data, when combining those who have self-responded with names checked off by field agents, South Dakota’s completion rate of 94.6% ranks 37th in the nation.
Administrative manager for the US Census Bureau South Dakota Field Office Miranda Brudvig says most of the metro areas are counted, but other areas need to be addressed by the Sept. 30 deadline.
The Census Bureau says statewide, 23-thousand households have yet to be counted.
