An Elkton man has been killed in a construction-related accident.
The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office says it happened Tuesday (July 14, 2026) shortly after 2:45 p.m. at a residence on Highway 13 near 483rd Avenue.
First responders found 40-year old Shane Brown of Elkton had been injured while operating a skid steer loader. Sheriff’s deputies say Brown was helping with a construction project when he was ejected from the loader he’d been operating and became trapped beneath it. Individuals on the scene freed Brown and attempted life saving measures, but the sheriff’s office reports those were unsuccessful.
In addition to the sheriff’s department, the Elkton Fire Department, Elkton Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance and North Memorial Air Service all responded. The incident is under investigation by both the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and the Brookings County Coroner.
