Shawn Lewis has been sworn in (July 14, 2026) to fill the seat on the Pierre City Commission that was left vacant when Commissioner Todd Johnson was elected mayor in the June 2, 2026, election.
Pierre City Commissioners are elected at-large and serve as the town’s legislative and policy-making body, providing direction on matters affecting city operations, public services, infrastructure, public safety, utilities, parks and recreation and the overall well-being of the community. In accordance with state law and the Pierre Home Rule Charter, the Lewis will serve until the June 2027 municipal election. At that time, he may choose to run for a 3-year term.
Pierre City Commissioners currently receive an annual salary of $20,168.63.

June 22, 2026:
Pierre residents interested in serving on the City Commission have until 5pm on Monday, July 6, 2026, to submit their letter of interest to City Hall.
Because current Commissioner Todd Johnson will be sworn in as Mayor of Pierre in July, that leaves his commission seat open.
Commissioners are elected at-large to represent the interests of all Pierre residents and may be assigned oversight responsibilities in areas such as public safety, engineering, public utilities and parks and recreation. To be eligible for appointment, applicants must:

Be a citizen of the United States;

Have been a resident of the City of Pierre for at least three months prior to appointment; and

Be a registered voter within the municipality.
The Pierre City Commission serves as the town’s legislative and policy-making body, providing direction on matters affecting city operations, public services, infrastructure, public safety, utilities, parks and recreation and the overall well-being of the community. Commissioners currently receive an annual salary of $20,168.63.
In accordance with state law and the Pierre Home Rule Charter, the individual appointed by the Commission will serve until the June 2027 municipal election. At that time, the commissioner may choose to run for a 3-year term.

Those interested should include any relevant experience they have in their letter. Letters will be reviewed by Director of Human Resources Laurie Gronlund, the Mayor and City Commissioners. Again, letters of interest must be received no later than 5pm on July 6, 2026.
