The Zap did something no team in the iLB has been able to do all summer long, and that is keep the Spearfish Sasquatch off the board. Spearfish has scored in every game this season during their 29-6 campaign, that is until they ran into River Walters and Cy Taylor on Monday night.
Walters got the start on the bump for the Zap and immediately got to work on the Squatch lineup retiring the first three batters in the blink of an eye. That would be the theme from both starters as Spearfish’s Austin Oelke was also dealing in his outing.
The Zap were able to strike first offensively when Dom DeCarlo drove in a Quinn Ludvigsen on a sacrifice fly to center. It was a close play at the plate but Ludvigsen used a bad hop to his advantage. The very next play, Mason Melton tried to make it 2-0 but was cut down in a bang-bang play at home. It was going to be that type of night.
Walters continued to deal until the sixth inning when his night came to an end, an amazing start for his first of the season. Walters went 6.0 IP striking out five and allowing just four hits. To limit the Spearfish offense like that, you know your stuff was good.
In the bottom of the sixth, Mason Melton took third on a wild pitch and then took home a few pitches later bringing in a huge insurance run for the home team. Cy Taylor would replace Walters in the seventh and mow through the lineup securing the 2-0 Zap win.
This win should give Oahe a big boost of confidence to close out the year strong, they will take on Spearfish for two today getting game one underway at 4:30 PM CT and game two to follow shortly after.
