A 16 year old boy from Highmore died in a vehicle versus train crash early Wednesday morning (Aug. 5, 2026) near Wessington, South Dakota, in Beadle County.
Preliminary crash information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates a Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern Railroad train was traveling eastbound on the train tracks around 1:44 a.m. CT. At the same time, the teenager was driving a 2008 Ford F-150 northbound on 374th Avenue. The vehicle drove into the railroad crossing and was struck by the train. The driver sustained fatal injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt.
The name has not yet been released.
The investigation is ongoing.
