PIERRE, S.D. – The Pierre Governors delivered a dominant performance Friday night, blanking Spearfish 65-0 behind an explosive offense and a record-setting night from senior receiver Carter Schiefelbein.
Pierre wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. After recovering a Spearfish fumble on the opening possession, the Governors marched 29 yards and struck first when Jerren Deal connected with Schiefelbein on a 20-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead.
Just over two minutes later, history was made.
Following an interception, Deal found Schiefelbein for an 82-yard touchdown, extending Pierre’s lead to 14-0. The touchdown reception pushed Schiefelbein past the previous mark and made him the all-time leading receiver in Pierre football history and Class 11AA history for career receiving yards.
The Governors never looked back.
Pierre’s defense controlled the game throughout the first half, creating turnovers and forcing a safety on a punt block. Deal and Schiefelbein hooked up again on a 42-yard touchdown pass later in the opening quarter, giving Pierre a 23-0 advantage. The Governors’ rushing attack took over from there as Thomas Snyder added a 5-yard touchdown run and Deal scored on a 7-yard keeper, helping Pierre race to a 37-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Pierre added two more scores before halftime. Porter Hunsley found the end zone on a 21-yard touchdown run, and Deal connected with Hudson Stoeser for a 22-yard touchdown pass to send the Governors into the break with a commanding 51-0 lead.
The second half brought more of the same. Backup quarterback Brecken Fuhrman threw two touchdown passes as the Governors continued to pile on points.
Pierre’s offense piled up 565 rushing and passing yards combined, while the defense pitched a shutout and consistently put the offense in favorable field position with turnovers and stops.
