The Sully Buttes Chargers knew that even as the four-seed and hosting the thirteen-seed, this would be no easy first round matchup with Corsica-Stickney. The Jaguars can chew up a lot of clock with a well-organized double-wing offense, and that is exactly what the Jaguars did.
Corsica-Stickney opened the game with the first possession and marched 80-yards down the field for an opening drive score paired with a two-point conversion. The score by Max VandenHoek was set up by a Braxton Truesdell screen pass that got them inside the one-yard line.
Trailing 8-0, Easton Moore and the Chargers drove the length of the field and found a score of their own to bring the deficit within two. It felt like Sully Buttes was settling in, however, the Jaguars answered right back with a second quarter touchdown score after another lengthy drive capped off by Charlie Leifers who powered it in from three yards out making it 14-6 going into the halftime break.
The Chargers came out committed to their gameplan in the third quarter and scored on their first drive of the second half on a six-yard scamper by Moore, but another failed two-point try would keep Corsica-Stickney out in front. After a Jaguar interception on 4th & 8, the Chargers looked like they were set to punch one in again. Although a Charger fumble inside Jaguar territory brought back bad memories and swung the momentum back to the visitors.
Corsica-Stickney would not be able to find paydirt, and the chargers would get the ball back in the fourth quarter.
Easton Moore calmly moved the ball down the field, and after a goal-line stand earlier in the night from the Jaguars defense, the outcome this time around turned to six for Sully Buttes. Moore found Barber for another touchdown connection to give the Chargers their first lead of the night with 4:36 remaining.
The Jaguars still had life, and pieced together an up-tempo drive into Charger territory. A blindside block would put the Jaguars well behind the sticks, and would ultimately bring the game down to a 4th & 7 with under 90 seconds left. A pass attempt over the middle was broken up by Barber, and the Chargers would hang on for the win. At the time of this writing, the opponent is still yet to be decided as Lyman and Bennett County are still not final. Stay tuned for updates.
