PIERRE, S.D. – The America’s 250 South Dakota Commission invites South Dakotans from across the state to witness history as they bury South Dakota’s official time capsule, which will be opened in 2076.
The time capsule will be buried at the Battleship South Dakota Memorial in Sioux Falls on November 2, the birth date of South Dakota.
“The burying of this time capsule will be our capstone event for the South Dakota America 250 Commission,” said Dr. Ben Jones, South Dakota State Historian and America 250 South Dakota Commission Chairman. “We’ve had an incredible year of events, and this is a great way to celebrate our state’s birthday.”
Final selection of the items buried was determined by a subgroup of the America 250 South Dakota Commission. The time capsule will be buried during a formal ceremony that starts at 1:30 p.m. on the 2nd. America 250 South Dakota Commissioner Tyler Tordsen will be the Master of Ceremonies.
“Attending this event is more about the future than the past,” concluded Jones. “This is our contribution to the nation’s Tricentennial in 2076. We hope that some of those who participate this year can also return in 50 years and connect the two celebrations.”
