A 42-year-old man from Stephan, SD, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Assault with Intent to Commit Murder, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, Robbery and Brandishing, Carrying, or Possession a Firearm during and in Relation to a Crime of Violence.
Robert Johnson, a/k/a Pitbull, pled not guilty.
Federal court information alleges on June 20, 2020, in Lower Brule, Johnson assaulted an individual with a shotgun, which resulted in serious bodily injury. The information further alleges Johnson took a duffle bag and its contents from the victim.
The maximum penalty if convicted is any term of years, up to life, in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, 5 years of supervised release and restitution may be ordered.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
This case is also part of Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws.
Johnson was remanded to the custody of the US Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Lower Brule Agency. Assistant US Attorney Troy R. Morley is prosecuting the case.
