A High Wind Warning is in effect until tomorrow afternoon (Fri.) in much of central and western South Dakota. There’s also an extreme risk of grassland fire because of dry conditions and anticipated wind gusts up to 60mph.
Weatherology meteorologist Mandy Thalhuber says wind is created by a difference in pressure systems.
There’s also an Extreme Fire Danger this afternoon along the Missouri River and in the western part of South Dakota. Strong winds combined with low humidity, dry ground and minimal—if any– snow cover set the stage for very high to extreme fire danger. Because of the high wind speed, there’s potential for downed power lines, which may be a source for fire ignition. A fire will start easily and has the potential to become large and spread quickly.
