Information from the state Department of Health says just over 15% (104,661) of South Dakota’s residents have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Dr. Mikel Holland is the President and Chief Medical Officer for Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre. He says as with any vaccine, people have reported everything from no side effects to having had a serious reaction.
He says the vaccine temporarily amplifies the recipient’s immune system.
Holland says as more people get the COVID-19 vaccine, the medical community learns more about it.
Holland says appointments are required to get the COVID-19 vaccine so Avera St. Mary’s staff are calling people to get them scheduled. He says at this time, there is no out-of-pocket cost to the vaccine recipient.
Holland says people who:
- live in Hughes, Stanley, Sully or Jones counties
- are age 70 and over
- are a transplant patient
- are a patient receiving cancer or dialysis treatment
- AND have not yet been contacted to receive the COVID-19 vaccine
…..should call 605-224-3158 to schedule an appointment to get the coronavirus vaccine in Pierre.
As of yesterday (Feb. 15, 2021), the State of South Dakota has dropped the eligible age for receiving a COVID vaccine down to 70 years and older, as allocations allow.
