The South Dakota Legislature has passed a bill (SB57) that makes big changes to state employee health benefits, but the details of those changes didn’t come out until after final passage.
House Majority Leader Kent Peterson says the changes were made as a way for the state to put more money into state employee salaries.
House Assistant Minority Leader Oren Lesmeister says they’ve heard from state employees who have said they weren’t as concerned about wages as they are the health benefits.
House Minority Leader Jamie Smith says he hopes the money goes where it’s supposed to go.
The Bureau of Human Resources has developed four plans for state employees to choose from. BHR is holding virtual and in person informational sessions this month to help state employees understand the new options.
