BROOKINGS – Three-time South Dakota Sportscaster of the Year Dellas Cole died February 20 in Brookings at 61.
Cole was diagnosed in 2013 with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, a debilitating lung disease for which there is no cure.
Cole spent over 40 years calling play-by-play for the Brookings Bobcats, Brookings Rangers and area baseball teams. A Platte native, Cole started his journalism career in high school as a sportswriter for The Platte Enterprise weekly newspaper. At South Dakota State, Cole was a sportswriter and performed various other tasks at The Collegian, SDSU’s campus newspaper. While in college, he began calling games part-time for KBRK Radio. A year before Cole earned his degree, KBRK’s sports director took a television job and Cole was hired to a full-time position, remaining at Brookings Radio until his passing.
Dellas is survived by his wife Margie, three children, including Danielle Anderson of Pierre, and three grandchildren.
