The Governor’s Office of Economic Development has awarded a $2.02 million Community Development Block Grant to the City of Pierre for a new domestic violence center facility.
Executive Director of Missouri Shores Sarah Reinhart says the board has discussed a need for a new shelter for many years, and the funds received from the State will help tremendously in jump-starting this project. She says the new shelter will include 13 client rooms, a large living space, large kitchen with two work stations, two efficiency-style ADA-compliant client rooms and a separate office with seven staff offices. This will allow Missouri Shores to accommodate the ever-growing number of individuals served every year.
Missouri Shores Domestic Violence Center is a domestic violence center serving men, women and children affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, or stalking. Their current facility is a nine-bed emergency shelter that serves hundreds of individuals annually. Other services provided include crisis intervention, court, law enforcement and medical advocacy, referral services and rental assistance.
The total estimated cost for a brand-new emergency shelter is over $3.5 million. The funds received from GOED use CARES Act monies to comply with CDC guidelines regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Two ADA-compliant, efficiency-style rooms will be used to isolate families who have been potentially exposed to the virus, as well as house male survivors in a safe environment where they can receive equal services.
Incidentally, Missouri Shores is holding its 30th annual Hollywood Tonight fundraiser tonight (March 5, 2022).
