SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — A cousin who helped identify the body of the man struck and killed by Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg questions how the tragedy was initially handled.
Former Democratic State Lawmaker Nick Nemec says it may be because a prominent person was involved.
“That’s my fear is that the authorities were trying to get their ducks in a row, putting that as a priority over identifying, positively identifying, the victim.”
Nemec claims it took too long for the authorities to contact the family, even after they were told that the victim was missing.
“Approximately 22 hours from the time of the accident to the time we identified the body, and ten hours from the time my brother gave them the heads-up on who the dead pedestrian probably was. It seems like it just took ‘em a darn long time to follow up on anything.”
Nemec says his cousin, 55-year-old Joe Boever was a quiet individual who never got mad at anybody.
Ravnsborg says he thought he’d hit a deer Saturday night west of Highmore and says he called 9-1-1 right after the collision. Boever’s body was discovered the next day in a ditch.
Ravnsborg’s office says the Republican Attorney General was driving back from a Lincoln Day Dinner at Rooster’s Bar & Grill in Redfield and he had not been drinking.
