Jay D. Vogt’s tenure as director of the South Dakota State Historical Society will soon be history. He has announced his retirement as director of the South Dakota State Historical Society and the State Historic Preservation Officer, effective Tuesday, December 8.
Jay D. Vogt, pictured, has been only the eighth person in the 119-year history of the South Dakota State Historical Society to serve as its director.
Vogt began his career in state government by working for more than eight years with the late Alice Kundert, first in the State Auditor’s Office and then as her deputy in the Office of the Secretary of State.
He started working for the South Dakota State Historical Society in 1987 as executive assistant to Director J.R. Fishburne. He then served as executive director of the South Dakota Heritage Fund (now South Dakota Historical Society Foundation) for 15 years. Vogt was named deputy director of the State Historical Society in 1999 and was appointed director in 2003.
Earlier this year, Vogt was appointed as an expert member of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and that appointment will continue.
Several other South Dakota State Historical Society personnel retired during the summer. Nancy Tystad Koupal retired as director of Research and Publishing and Ken Stewart retired as Archives Research Room Administrator.
We welcome Dr. Dedra McDonald Birzer of Hillsdale, Mich., as the new director of Research and Publishing and Halley Hair of Pierre as Archives Research Room Administrator.
