At this week’s meeting (Tues.), the Pierre City Commission approved ordinances to update the town’s building code and to create a fee structure for property code and building code violations.
City building official Matt Elberson says owners who ignore property maintenance violations will now be subject to fines.
He says people who do building projects in Pierre without proper licenses may also be fined now.
Elberson says property owners in Pierre will be notified before a fine is issued.
Pierre requires owner’s to provide and ensure properly functioning smoke detectors in their properties.
Pierre City Commissioners also adopted the 2018 edition of the International I-Codes, which Elberson says align with new industry best practices to ensure the safety and integrity of new and remodeled structures, as well as other construction projects. He says adopting the modern code helps keep property insurance more affordable in Pierre and provides the city with another option for situations when property owners remain chronically out of compliance.
The new ordinances go into effect on May 1.
