Over a dozen fires over the 4th of July weekend in the Pierre and Fort Pierre area required the attention of firefighters.
The Pierre Rural Volunteer Fire Department was called out for a structure fire on Plainsview Road Sunday (July 4, 2021) about 1am.
Chief Doug Hinkle says upon arrival, units found a small storage shed completely engulfed. The fire was put out, but the shed and its contents were a total loss. The fire also melted some lights and charred the paint on the back of a pickup that was been parked next to the shed, but had been moved by the time fire units arrived.
Cause of the fire is still undetermined. The Pierre Rural Fire Department, Pierre Rescue Squad and Hughes County Sheriff’s Office all responded. Units were on scene for a little over an hour.
Around noon on Monday (July 5), Pierre Rural provided mutual aid assistance to the Blunt Rural Volunteer Fire Department at a wheat field fire near the intersection of 302nd Avenue and 205th Street in Hughes County. Lightning started that fire.
The Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department responded to about a dozen small fires. The Four Corners Volunteer Fire Department also had a few calls over the weekend.
