Around 50 volunteers picked up over 3,000 pounds of litter and debris during the annual Missouri River/Lake Sharpe Cleanup last night (Wednesday, July 7) at Pierre and Fort Pierre.
This year’s cleanup gathered 1700 pounds of lumber, 1180 pounds of litter and trash, 100 pounds of scrap metal and 42 pounds of tires. The City of Pierre properly disposed of the trash.
Volunteers cleaned up public areas from just above the Oahe Dam to Farm Island. The 11 cleanups held in the past 13 years have removed nearly 23 tons of trash from along the river since 2009.
The clean-up was coordinated by the Izaak Walton League, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Fish and Wildlife Service, the cities of Pierre and Fort Pierre and many other local businesses and organizations.
Next year’s Missouri River/Lake Sharpe Cleanup is tentatively scheduled for July 6, 2022.
