Pierre city officials held the second of three informational meetings today (July 9, 2021) on a proposed plan to implement a registration, licensing and inspection program for rental housing in town.
City building official Matt Elberson says the inspections would be based on the property maintenance code.
Elberson says inspectors will also be looking at the structure of the rentals.
Paint is another area of concern.
Elberson says some of the other items inspectors look for are properly working plumbing and electrical, dryer vents clear of lint, no holes in walls, permanent source of heat, hand and guard rails, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and emergency exit signs if appropriate.
The plan calls for all non-owner occupied rental structures within the city of Pierre to be registered and licensed annually and inspected at least every five years.
Another informational meeting will be held Monday at 5:30pm in the Dakota Room at River Cities Transit (1600 E. Dakota Avenue).
Following the three informational meetings, Pierre city staff will come back to the commission for action on a proposed ordinance.
