Medical cannabis program rules pass Interim Rules Review Committee
The Legislature’s Interim Rules Review Committee approved the South Dakota Department of Health’s proposed administrative rules to establish a medical cannabis program in the state.
Secretary of Health Kim Malsam-Rysdon is disappointed the review committee chose to take out the list of specific medical conditions a person must be diagnosed with in order to qualify for a medical cannabis card– a list she says was created based on public input.
The legislature approved 143 of the Heath Department’s 149 proposed rules.
Malsam-Rysdon says approval of the proposed rules package by the Rules Review Committee is the result of months of work and is proof the public engagement process works.
Governor Kristi Noem, a staunch opponent of legalizing any form of marijuana, says the state is on track to implement a responsible medical cannabis program according to the direction given by the voters. She says “South Dakota will continue to implement the best, most patient-focused medical cannabis program in the country.”
